A Beautiful Bobcat Captured on Camera in the Verdugo Mountains

Meet the species Lynx rufus. This carnivore walked across Camera #2 at 1:55 PM. It was a nice surprise to get a glimpse of this cat during the daytime in such a heavily used recreation area. These elusive animals have serious risks posed to them by human activity (aside from habitat loss and segmentation). Rodenticides are one of the biggest threats to these animals. Households, businesses, golf courses, and other industry place rat poisons in the environment. These toxins bioaccumulate in the food web, creating illness and death in non target species. About 9/10 bobcats tested in the Los Angeles area have tested positive for these poisons. This is a really unfortunate statistic considering the exposure is completely preventable.

A big voice in the community that advocates for these issues is Poison Free Malibu. To learn more about the negative impacts of rodent poison on wildlife, you can go to their website. https://poisonfreemalibu.org/#chain
